There’s been a new upgrade to our homebase here at the Palmetto Trail office… and we can’t wait to share it with everyone. Thanks to the hard work and talent of Reagan Fennessy, the office is decorated with a brand-new mural that brings the spirit of South Carolina’s trail to life through color, creativity, and some of the places and symbols that make the Palmetto Trail so special.
From mountain waterfalls to Lowcountry waterways, the artwork is a reminder that the trail is much more than a path - it is a connection to the landscapes, history, wildlife, and outdoor experiences that make our state unique. Throughout the mural, you will spot pieces of South Carolina that may feel familiar to longtime trail users, along with details that might inspire your next adventure.

The Carolina wren, South Carolina’s state bird, makes an appearance in the mural as a nod to the sounds of the outdoors. Small but full of personality, this bird’s cheerful song is one hikers may hear while exploring wooded passages across the state.
Its presence in the artwork reminds us of the vibrant wildlife that calls South Carolina home, adding another layer of connection to the natural world.
This piece is just one shining example of the many unique attributes that make South Carolina so incredibly special, and it stands as a true testament to the rich diversity of our wonderful state.

And if you look closely, you might spot the yellow jessamine, South Carolina’s beloved state flower. With its vibrant golden blooms, this delicate yet resilient plant is a sure sign that spring has arrived, painting the landscape in cheerful hues.
Its presence along the trail is a gentle reminder of the natural beauty that thrives in every corner of South Carolina, from sunlit meadows to shaded woodland paths, celebrating the state’s unique charm and the changing seasons.
The mural also proudly features South Carolina’s state fish, the striped bass, a true icon of the Palmetto State’s waterways. These majestic fish thrive in the rivers and lakes that crisscross our state, symbolizing the countless opportunities for fishing, relaxation, and adventure on the water. Whether casting a line from the banks of the Broad River or exploring the serene trails near a sparkling lake, the striped bass reminds us of the joy and connection to nature that the Palmetto Trail and its surroundings provide.

Several beloved Palmetto Trail landmarks are woven into the design as well. The mural highlights Stumphouse Tunnel, located near the Oconee Passage, which is a historic and unforgettable stop where visitors can step into the cool, dark tunnel carved into the mountain.

Looking at the bottom left, you'll find the beautiful Station Cove Falls which is another Oconee-area treasure known for its beautiful waterfall and peaceful forest setting.

Keeping with the many gems of the Upstate, you'll see the Eastatoe Suspension Bridge which stretches across the Eastatoe creek, one of the trail’s most scenic crossings.

Traveling to the Midlands, the mural of course highlights one of Palmetto Trail's most visited passages, the Peak to Prosperity passage! The Alston railroad trestle represents the trail’s connection to South Carolina history and the former rail corridors that now welcome walkers, runners, and cyclists.

The Capital City Passage and South Carolina State House are included too - a reminder that even in the center of Columbia, the trail offers a chance to step outside and reconnect with nature.
Toward the coast, the artwork also includes the Intracoastal Waterway, reflecting the marshes, waterways, and coastal landscapes found along the eastern end of the Palmetto Trail.

Of course, the mural is not only about places. Symbols of fishing, hunting, campfires, hiking, and biking celebrate the many ways people can experience the outdoors and get involved with the Palmetto Trail. Whether your perfect trail day includes casting a line, gathering around a fire, taking a peaceful walk, or riding through the woods, there is something here for everyone.
We hope this mural brings a little more color and inspiration to our headquarters, and encourages visitors to discover a new passage, revisit a favorite place, or simply spend more time outside. After all, South Carolina is full of stories worth exploring, and the Palmetto Trail is here to help you find them.
