The trail passes through rich midlands farming and hunting lands before arriving at SC DNR’s WT “Billy” Tolar Boat Landing on the Wateree River. This beautiful spot provides access for canoes and other small vessels, and provides good fishing for brim and bass. From there, the trail climbs to the top of Cook’s Mountain, the highest point in the Midlands. From the 372-foot peak it is said you can see into 3 counties on a good day. Descending back into bottomland hardwood forests and wetlands, managed for wildlife by the SC DNR, expect to see ducks, migratory birds, deer, wild turkey and quail, as well as a variety of plants. The trail also includes historical interpretation, noting the history of rice plantations and the cartographer who gave his name to the site.

The values of the Boyd Foundation are rooted in the late Darnall W. Boyd’s strong desire to improve the quality of the lives of those who live, work, and play in the Midlands. Today, those values are championed by Susan Boyd and the other Board members through projects that enhance the outdoors, education, and the preservation of history, to make Columbia a better place to live. The Foundation's hope is to encourage its young people, and those from other communities, to stay and live in the Midlands. The Foundation takes great pride in being hands-on with the projects it undertakes, providing insight and oversight. The Foundation seeks charitable projects where the impact of the time of its Board members and its financial contribution will be remembered and enjoyed for generations to come.
