Palmetto Conservation Foundation’s Senior Explorers program encourages greater use of our state’s natural resources, promotes healthy and active living, and provides outdoor skills for participants. This program is graciously funded through Palmetto Health Hospital.

We have many exciting classes and hikes planned for the coming months.  Our goal is to teach a combination of health and fitness mixed with outdoor education and recreation.

What is Senior Explorers:

Fitness 15:  The first 15 minutes of each class will be focused on a fitness topic such as yoga, muscular strength and flexibility, stress reduction, nutrition, and cardiovascular health.  These different activities will be incorporated into the outing, and can also be beneficial in your everyday lives.

Outdoor Education:  Detailed training and instruction in areas that correlate with the outing, expanding participant’s knowledge and skill base in outdoor topics.  Using hands-on materials and field guides, we will explore passages of the Palmetto Trail as well as other local natural areas.

Destination: A specific pre-decided location of interest will be set as the center of the day’s outing, encouraging participants to expand their comfort zones and drawing awareness to scenic natural and historic locations.  Outings include hikes, tours, and paddle trips.

2011 Senior Explorer Outings

Anne Springs Close Greenway Tour

October 6, 2011

9am

The Anne Springs Close Greenway opened in 1995. Anne’s eight children dedicated the 2,300 acres to her as a tribute to her lifelong commitment to recreation and the environment. The Greenway provides for low-impact recreation activities while maintaining a natural habitat for wildlife, protecting the Steele Creek watershed, and preserving several sites of historical interest.

Our tour will start at the Nature Center, where the group can choose one of two options for hiking. The first option is an easy 1.5 mile hike around Lake Haigler, and the second option is a 3 mile hike that goes by the Dairy Barn. Anne will be joining the group for the 3 mile hike. Other ASCG staff will be available to answer questions and provide information on the property, historical buildings, and nature trails. The group will eat lunch at one of the picnic shelters. Additional water and snacks will be provided. For more information on the ASCG please visit www.ascgreenway.org.

Limited seating on the bus is available on a first come first served basis.  Everyone will meet at the Heritage at Lowman at 8:45am.  You can either carpool from Lowman or ride the bus, which will leave at 9am.  You will need to bring a lunch, water bottle, camera, bug spray, and sunscreen.

The Heritage at Lowman is located at:

2101 Dutch Fork Road

Chapin, SC 29036
