Uncommon Courage

Although most history books cite Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas as the litigation that ended school segregation, a little known case from Clarendon County, South Carolina actually spearheaded the Civil Rights movement. In 1954, Briggs vs. Elliott had little immediate impact on the daily life in public schools for African-Americans. But in its symbolic, unanimous decision, the US Supreme Court put segregationists on the defensive.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the case-James Clyburn and Jennifer Revels revisit the Briggs vs. Elliott decision by exploring the uncommon courage of the residents of Clarendon County who sacrificed so much. In this stunning pictorial history, visit with the people who brought this case to life and changed history.
